Calvert Virtual Academy FAQs

FAQs for Calvert Virtual Academy

1. What is the role of the Online Instructor?

The Online Instructors develop and assign assessments, including quizzes, compositions, projects, and threaded discussions. They conduct periodic live instructional sessions tor remediation, review, and sharing of projects. They take the role of an Advisory Teacher by evaluating the assessments; they also provide guidance for projects and threaded discussions. They are available by phone and email to answer questions about the assessments.

2. How will my student’s assessments be submitted?

All assessments are submitted online. Quizzes are taken directly in the online classroom. For longer assignments, such as compositions or projects, students must use a scanner to create PDF or JPG files that are submitted through a drop box in the online classroom.

3. How many Online Instructors will be assigned to my student?

Students in Grade 6 will have one Online Instructor for all subjects to allow them to transition into the Middle School program. Students in Grade 7 and 8 will have three Online Instructors, one for the Core subjects of Reading, Science, and Social Studies; one for Math; and one for Grammar, Composition, and Spelling.

4. What is the role of the Homeroom Teacher?

The Homeroom Teacher will monitor students’ academic progress across all subjects. The Homeroom Teacher will also monitor students’ pacing through the course. While there is flexible pacing, the Homeroom Teacher will contact the family if a student has not been submitting work in order to help the student adjust pacing so the course is completed in a timely manner.

5. Whom should my student contact for help with daily work?

Students should contact Education Counselors for help with daily work.

6. How much interaction will my student have with other students?

Students will interact with their peers through the clubs, class meetings, periodic live instructional sessions, threaded discussions, and discussion boards.

7. When will the Calvert Virtual classrooms be available for my student to access assignments?

The Calvert Virtual classrooms will be available the week of August 15.

8. When will the clubs begin and how often will they meet?

The clubs will begin the week of September 12 and meet every two weeks during the regular school year.

9. Is there any equipment or special material needed for the clubs?

For the Photography Club, students will need a basic digital camera so they can submit their work online. Students in the Literature Club and the Math Club will need a scanner that can create either PDF or JPG files.

10. What is flexible pacing?

Students will not have due dates for assessments, but they will be expected to submit work regularly. Families will be able to adjust course schedules to fit family needs.

11. Since there is flexible pacing for the Calvert Virtual Academy, how long will my student have to complete the course?

Calvert allows students 12 months to complete a course. If a student needs more than one year to complete the course, the Learning Guide must provide a full explanation in writing of the need for the requested extension.
